This elastic device converts the camera of your smartphone into a fully functional 3-axis analog joystick. It is under development by a research group at Keio University. “The way this system works is very simple. There are small markers in this elastic device and the markers are detected by this built-in front-facing mobile phone camera. By tracking how the markers move as the elastic device deforms, this system enables a variety of inputs.”

“The camera is detecting the markers right now. When you press the device, like this, the markers move further apart, or they move horizontally or vertically, or they get skewed.

Netflix snags DVD.com domain, invests in the future of optical media

Looking for a shortcut to Netflix's home on the web. Try hitting up DVD.com - it'll take you there, for now. The latest address to join the family of Netflix redirects actually brings you to a subdomain - dvd.netflix.com - suggesting that the company could once again be planning to split its streaming and physical media services, at least from an access perspective. A shareholder letter lists the company's U.S. DVD subscriptions at 11.17 million at the end of Q4, bringing in a total of $370 million in revenue, with a profit of $194 million.

AT&T HTC One X may arrive on May 6

AT&T's LTE-enabled version of the HTC One X (which is known elsewhere as the One XL) could arrive in stores on May 6, according to the latest leak on the matter. Best Buy has been taking pre-orders for the smartphone ever since last month. And that particular retailer is where this rumor allegedly originated. See, the story goes that Best Buy sent a customer who pre-ordered a One X an email in which it said that the phone would be delivered on May 6. Of course we're meant to believe that this was all a mistake on Best Buy's part (publicizing the date, not the date itself).

Ready or not, here it comes: Timeline takes over Facebook today

. After being greeted with mixed reactions, millions of users have warmed up to Facebook's new layout, dubbed Timeline. The new face of Facebook places all of a user's interactions with the social network on the profile page in reverse chronological order, giving friends a single destination with infinite scrolling on which they can observe all status updates, photos, wall posts and more. While Facebook tried its best to make the transition an easy one, the company said in January that the slow march to making Timeline a requirement was underway.

Gaming startup GIC has taken it upon itself to update the old chance cube by outfitting it with LED backlights, anti-cheat roll detection and Bluetooth connectivity. DICE+, as the shakers of tomorrow are called, will sell for between $30 and $40 when they launch later this year. Google Will Sell Subsidized Nexus Tablets Directly To Consumers Via Online Webstore [Rumor]

WSJ is confirming what many of us have suspected all along. According to the Journal, Google will be entering the tablet market with their very own Nexus tablet (possibly more than one) that they will sell directly to consumers via their online webstore. Big “G” wont actually be manufacturing any of this hardware themselves, instead allowing ASUS and Samsung to do all the labor for them. It's also being said that Google will be subsidizing these tablets, keeping them around a $200-ish price-point where they plan to make up some of the costs through Play Store purchases.

How Forza 4 recorded the Mazda 787B, its loudest car ever

In the Forza Motorsport 4 vs. Gran Turismo 5 debate, no one questions Forza's commitment to genuine engine noise. Normally, the Turn 10 sound engineers use Dyno Authority in a business and residential area of Seattle to record their cars' sounds, but when it came to the 1991 Mazda 787B that was unleashed in February's ALMS DLC, the Le Mans-winning racer was just too loud. In fact, the 700-horsepower 2.7-liter Wankel-engined legend with four rotors and its continuously variable intake was the loudest car that Forza engineers have ever caught on mic.

Treasury suggests GM buy back troubled Ally Financial

Back when Ally Financial was known as GMAC Financial, the U.S. Treasury gave it $17.2 billion in TARP funds to weather the global economic crisis. GMAC is now Ally Financial, and although it has repaid $5.4 billion of what it was loaned, there doesn't seem to be a clear path for repaying the outstanding amount. Bloomberg reports that Ally's mortgage unit, Residential Captial (ResCap), is teetering on the ledge of bankrupcty, and its banking operations didn't perform well in the Federal Reserve's stress tests that assess a bank's health.

The promise of free energy is an enticing one - that's free as in renewable source, not cost. (This is capitalism, after all, someone's got to foot the bill.) Economic gripes aside, research outfits like M.I.T. are getting us one step closer to this cleaner fuel future with the creation of three dimensional photovoltaic cells.
