NPD: Ultrabooks are saving the high-end notebook market

. For people who want super-thin computers and who don't feel like paying more than $2,000 for a Retina MacBook Pro, ultrabooks are a blessing. And according to the NPD Group, ultrabooks are helping to keep the U.S. notebook market afloat as they “are off to a fast start capturing nearly 11 percent of all $700+ Windows notebooks sales at U.S. retail through the first five months of 2012.” What's more, ultrabooks' share of Windows notebooks costing at least $700 has steadily climbed month by month this year, going from just over 6% in January to more than 15% in May.

webOS hacked, offers swiping gesture to switch apps

HP recently made available the source code for webOS Community Edition, and you can say that developers have dived into the operating system with a buzz, modifying it according to their whim, fancy and ability. Well, what are the results of their labor. One of the initial hacks hail from from Dave Freeman, who was a developer at HP Palm. He successfully enabled the user to switch between currently running apps by swiping from the side of the screen. Normally, this move is done by swiping up from the bottom of the screen so that a set of "cards” are brought up, and then you make the switch through scrolling it.

. Previous reports suggested that Samsung was working on a sequel for its wildly successful Galaxy Note smartphone. The follow-up “phablet” was said to feature a larger unbreakable plane display and a quad-core processor. According to an anonymous source speaking with GSM Arena, the Note II will be equipped with a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display and a design inspired by Samsung's Galaxy S III smartphone. Despite the larger screen, the width of the device has reportedly been reduced.

Chrysler adding jobs at Toledo Jeep plant to boost Wrangler production

Chrysler adding jobs at Toledo Jeep plant to boost Wrangler production

New car sales have been on the upswing, and few vehicles have experienced more success than the Jeep Wrangler. The iconic off-roader set an all-time May sales record with 14,454 units sold, and its total sales are up 34 percent on the year. That's good news for Chrysler, and it could lead to more high-wage manufacturing jobs in northern Ohio. Automotive News reports that Team Pentastar plans to add an unspecified number of jobs to its Toledo Jeep plant in the fourth quarter of 2012. The move should help Chrysler satiate demand for the perpetually hot Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited, and it could help international sales, as well.

BMW and Toyota sign deal to collaborate on sports car and EV technology

There's not a lot of specifics to be had on this one just yet, but BMW and Toyota have inked a new deal that will see them collaborate on far more than the batteries they've already agreed to work on together. According to the automakers, the new arrangement will see them focus on four key areas: a fuel cell system, powertrain electrification, lightweight technologies and, last but not least, joint development of the "architecture and components for a future sports vehicle." Unfortunately, neither party is offering much indication about the types of vehicles we might see as a result.

Audi R8 E-Tron laps 'Ring in record-setting 8:09, celebrates silently

Two months ago, the Audi R8 E-Tron was caught at the Nürburgring, getting its gumption up for what everyone has come to consider The Obligatory Timed Lap of Destiny. The lap has been completed with Markus Winkelhock at the wheel, and the result is a world record for a series production electric car: eight minutes and 9.099 seconds. If you believe in Wikipedia's list of 'Ring lap times, that puts the R8 E-Tron with its 375 horsepower and stupefying torque 25 seconds behind the R8 V10, five seconds adrift of the eight-cylinder R8, and in the same company as the Audi RS4 and previous generation BMW M6.

Google+ has 250 million users, more mobile than desktop

Google wasn't going to leave its budding social layer (don't call it a network) out of today's IO fun. It gave itself a bit of a pat on the back for (probably) exceeding people's expectations. For all the jokes that have been made (some of them on this very site) at Google+'s expense, it's racked up more than 250 million users. Sure, only 150 million actually active, but simply getting people signed up is a victory in itself. And, hey, about 50 percent of them sign on every day. More interestingly, Vic Gundotra says that more users are signing in with the mobile app than visiting the desktop site.

Microsoft Set to Provide Windows 8 Updates Even to XP-Powered PCs

Microsoft Set to Provide Windows 8 Updates Even to XP-Powered PCs

While Microsoft promised an inexpensive upgrade plan to Windows 8 to consumers purchasing new Windows PCs, ZDNet reported with certainty that the upgrades will go further way, way back. Mary Jo Foley, who has been historically accurate in rumors like these, wrote that PCs running as old as Windows Vista SP1 can upgrade to Windows 8 with its settings remain intact. Meanwhile, really old PCs with OS as old as Windows XP SP3–which we see a lot in penny-pinching corporations–can upgrade to the soon-to-be-released Windows 8, carrying their personal files along in the process.
Some details on the upgrade plan seems dated, though.

Orange France begins nationwide NFC SIM rollout in the name of 'Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité'

NFC's potential uses are numerous - contactless mobile payments, automated actions and content sharing to name a few - but aside from its scattered inclusion in a limited number of handsets in the US and overseas, we've yet to see it truly take off. Cue Orange France. The wireless carrier's taking a non-traditional route to spur adoption by sidestepping manufacturers and bringing the near field communication tech to all 27 million of its subscribers directly. To do this, the operator's implementing Gemalto's UpTeq SIM, a secure NFC solution the company claims is on par with existing chip-based implementations.

Google Play hits 600,000 apps, 20 billion total installs

Google during its I/O keynote hit a symbolic milestone: it now has 600,000 apps in the Google Play Store. As well, the store is clearly hitting a brisk pace in adoption, with 1.5 billion downloads every month and 20 billion since Android began. Free apps are available in 190 countries, with paid apps in 132. The app and download counts stack up fairly well to Apple's own claims, although not universally: it's just short of the App Store's 650,000 apps, but Apple can still point to 30 billion total downloads. Google also hasn't said how many apps are explicitly tablet-friendly versus 225,000 iPad-oriented apps.

Sergey Brin briefly pulled out a light blue prototype of Google Glass whilst on stage at Google I/O, and as it turns out, those are evidently the latest and greatest models that the company is willing to wear around. We ran into social exec Vic Gundotra after this morning's keynote, only to find him donning precisely the same set that was teased on stage. We asked if the blue was just part of Google's experimentation with coloring Glass, and he chuckled while confessing that he wasn't authorized to speak further about the project or its ambitions. Still, the man looks good in blue.

Thought that Google had cornered the market on free, overhead-view photo mapping solutions. You clearly don't reside in Redmond, because Bing Maps' aerial image library just got another 165TB worth of hi-res data that covers an additional 38 million square kilometers of the globe. To put that in perspective, Microsoft's mapping solution previously had but 129TB worth of such eye-in-the-sky imagery, so this new batch of satellite shots more than doubles your viewing pleasure.

Wii U games priced at $100 are “fictitious prices”, according to Nintendo

The Nintendo Wii U has yet to get priced, but it seems that some online retailers such as Amazon and GameStop have taken it upon themselves to start predicting how much the Wii U's games will cost and have pegged games like Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros. U, Just Dance 4 and Lego City Undercover at a price of $100. Yikes. Given that the Nintendo Wii is priced at the $200+ range, it is kind of shocking to think that Wii U games could cost half the price of the previous gen console itself.

Or maybe one of its myriad racing cars – it does, after all, power the bulk of the LMP2 racers on the grid at Le Mans, not to mention the experimental DeltaWing. But the Leaf. Sure, maybe for emissions-free motoring, but not for speed.
Yet it's the Leaf in which Nissan will attempt to set a new Guinness World Record at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed. And not the Nismo RC version, either, though that will be on hand for the festival as well. No, Nissan will attempt a world record in a bone-stock electric Leaf...
