Globalfoundries unveils 14nm-XM chip architecture, vows up to a 60 percent jump in battery life

Globalfoundries wants to show that it can play the 3D transistor game as well as Intel. Its newly unveiled 14nm-XM (Extreme Mobility) modular architecture uses the inherently low-voltage, low-leak nature of the foundry's FinFET layout, along with a few traces of its still-in-development 20nm process, to build a 14-nanometer chip with all the size and power savings that usually come from a die shrink.

Porsche unveils more powerful Cayenne S Diesel

Porsche unveils more powerful Cayenne S Diesel

We recently drove the new 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel – the automaker's first oil-burning offering here in the States. But here in Paris, Porsche has pulled the wraps off of a more powerful version of the diesel Cayenne, and on paper, it sure looks sweet. The meat and potatoes of the Cayenne S Diesel package is a twin-turbocharged 4.2-liter diesel V8 that produces 382 horsepower and 627(!) pound-feet of torque. Having that much grunt on tap means the all-wheel-drive Cayenne will shoot to 62 miles per hour in a scant 5.7 seconds, topping out at 157 mph.

U.S. regional carriers undercut major carries with iPhone 5 discounts

. There's just no getting around it: iPhone 5′s aren't cheap. For most people, it'll cost at least $199 with a two-year contract for a 16GB model. But U.S. regional carriers are sweetening the deal on the iPhone 5 with $50 discounts on all three iPhone models. Instead of $199 (16GB), $299 (32GB) and $399 (64GB), customers who sign two-year contracts with Appalachian Wireless, Cellcom or nTelos can pick them up for $50 less than what Apple (AAPL) and the three major U.S.

Leaked Apple IDs came from a publishing company, not the FBI

. Hackers who are purportedly part of Anonymous last week claimed to have stolen more than 12 million unique identifiers belonging to various Apple (AAPL) devices. The hackers claimed that the IDs were obtained from a compromised FBI laptop, although both Apple and the FBI denied the report. But now a small Florida-based publishing company called BlueToad has admitted to NBC News on Monday that the stolen data had been obtained from its own servers.

LG Display becomes latest to copy Apple – by suing Samsung

. It seems like every consumers electronics company is accused of copying Apple (AAPL) at some point, and while the Cupertino-based giant may or may not have been inspired by some of LG's work in the past, LG (066570) sister company LG Display (LPL) is now taking a page out of Apple's playbook… by suing Samsung (005930). The Wall Street Journal on Thursday reported that LG Display has filed a lawsuit against Samsung in a South Korea civil court alleging that Samsung's OLED smartphone and tablet displays infringe on seven of its patents covering the design of the panels and driver circuitry.

Google retires more services, consolidates others in continued efficiency bid

When you run as many services as Google does, every once in a while you're going to have to do some pruning. Evidently Mountain View's got the secateurs out, having just announced the next batch of its projects that will be getting axed wound down. For the chop are: AdSense for Feeds, Classic Plus, Spreadsheet Gadgets, Places for Android, and +1 Reports in Webmaster Tools. Other services are being merged into existing properties to prevent overlap, such as Google Storage for Picasa and Drive - which are now consolidated - and Insights for Search is now part of Google Trends.

Samsung SSD 840 Pro caters to speed seekers with faster random access

It's difficult to thrive in the solid-state drive world. Unless you've got just the right controller and flash memory, most performance-minded PC users will rarely give you a second glance. Samsung muscled its way into that narrow view with the SSD 830 last year; it intends to lock our attention with the new SSD 840 and SSD 840 Pro. The Pro's 520MB/s and 450MB/s sequential read and write speeds are only modest bumps over the 830, but they don't tell the whole story of just how fast it gets.

As it turns out though – and as we are amply reminded by the ceaseless wonders of eBay Motors – the 1988 Mitsubishi Galant Sigma was moving the needle in terms of interior design, at least. In this meticulously well-documented example, you'll see that the Sigma had it going on as far as steering-wheel accessible controls.
