RIM gets to use BBM name without any implications

Research In Motion (RIM) is certainly a company that could do with plenty of good news, considering the rather tough times that the company has fallen into recently. Well, good to hear that a federal court has ruled in favor of RIM, saying that the use of the name “BBM” does not infringe upon any trademarks. BBM Canada's CEO, Jim MacLeod, mentioned last December that "We want our name back", referring to RIM's use of BBM that is associated with their popular BlackBerry Messenger service.

Apple develops new fault monitoring battery

Apple develops new fault monitoring battery

Just today, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple which showed off a new fault monitoring battery system. According to Apple, the fault-monitoring mechanism is capable of generating an alert and/or disable use of a portable electronic device that holds the battery pack. Imagine the fault-monitoring mechanism indicating the fault via a visual alert such as a color-changing mechanism, or through an audible alarm. Not only that, it also touched on Apple's Audio Jack Assemblies patent, but that is another story for a different day.

Microsoft SkyDrive updated for Windows and Mac

The cloud does seem to be the place to be these days, and Microsoft certainly knows it. In fact, Microsoft has announced updates for their SkyDrive service which will target both Mac and Windows platforms. A new feature for Windows 8 Release Preview that is due early next month (next month, by the way, starts tomorrow, so it is shorter than it sounds) has been tested, where this will enable one to retrieve photos from just about any computer or machine that has SkyDrive installed. This will happen even if your cloud storage space is already at its maximum, although for most of us, chances are we have yet to maximize our 150,000 file limit.

Samsung's S-Voice Agrees With Siri, Says Windows Phone is the Best Smartphone

When human beings purchase a mobile device, we think about things like specs, app availability, design, form factors and for some, even popularity. However, when something which works on blunt fact is asked to select something, it will do so based on information and data that it has collected. That at least is how we have been seeing it work. Prior to this, we've seen Siri, the voice-recognition assistant application on the iPhone 4S indicate that the Nokia Lumia 900 which runs on the Windows Phone OS was the 'Best Smartphone Ever'.

It is definitely a naming coup for Sir Richard Branson with his latest release, the Virgin Pure device that intends to alter the drinking habits of folks living in Britain, where the Virgin Strauss Water is said to deliver a range of counter-top purified water solutions which intend to change the way many families drink water at home. Right now, research shows that 20% of UK households prefer to rely on bottled water as their primary source of drinking water, while another 20% use filter jugs. That would mean 10 million British households who prefer to drink bottled or treated water compared to standard tap water.

I cannot wait for the Dark Knight Rises, and hopefully Nolan's conclusion to the Batman trilogy will offer a fitting end. I suspect that there will be plenty of tears and tense moments ahead, not to mention the constant moral struggles that Batman has to go through with all sorts of weirdos dropping by Gotham City. Well, movie aside, we do know that there will be a limited edition Batman Nokia Lumia 900 coming our way, and it will be limited to just 900 units worldwide. Intel details 14 dual-core Ivy Bridge processors ahead of Computex

Intel announced its quad-core Ivy Bridge processors in April, but we've known that dual-core CPUs must be on the way too. And alas, the chip maker does have some up its sleeve - 14, to be exact. Core i5 and Core i7 versions will be the first to ship, with Core i3 processors launching later this year along with new Pentiums and Celerons. Of the 14 dual-core processors, six are desktop-grade. The rest are mobile, though four are ultra-low voltage (which will be denoted by a U at the end of their name).

Intellectual Ventures' CEO and founder Nathan Myhrvold, who previously spent some 14 years at Microsoft Research, took the stage here at D10, and as predicted, his interview with Walt Mossberg was quite the invigorating one. You may know the man and his company for its vicious patent trolling - or, what appears to be patent trolling. In essence, a lot of its business comes from acquiring patent portfolios, and then licensing and / or suing companies to "enforce" them.

Lenovo IdeaTab S2109 makes a splash Stateside, offers a lightweight slice of Android 4.0 for $349

Lenovo has offered few hints (if unsubtle ones) that the IdeaTab S2109 was on the way, but it's now in the US in earnest. As we saw early on, some of the Android 4.0 tablet's specs read like those of an iPad 2, down to the 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 IPS panel, 1.3-pound weight and ever so slightly thicker 8.9mm unibody shell. Lenovo is catering more to the movie-watching set, though: a four-speaker system and 1080p video over micro-HDMI make us see it as a couch-surfer's Netflix machine. We're a bit less enthused with the aging dual-core, 1GHz TI OMAP 4430 inside, but we won't complain about the $349 asking price.

Remember Infinitec. Tricky question, no. The company came to us at CES 2010 with a product that had big - nay, huge - aspirations. It was a simple USB stick that promised to enable ad hoc streaming, claiming to bring "infinite storage" to PC users. Unfortunately, it wasn't exactly seamless in operation, and the company's been radio silent ever since. Until today. The Dubai-based outfit is officially getting back in the consumer technology game starting right now, and as it seems that all the cool kids are doing these days, it's going the Kickstarter route in lieu of more conventional capital raising.

Assuming the speculators have it right, Konami is set to unveil new Castlevania games tomorrow, although it looks like gaming magazine Nintendo Power might have let the cat out of the bag a bit earlier than intended. As pictured in the photograph above, a small blurb at the bottom has "confirmed" one of the games, the Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate which will be the full title for the upcoming 3DS release. The world's most voracious car market, China, knows and loves Jeep vehicles well enough to fuel a sales boom that's got the company looking to add dealers and re-fire local production.
Chinese buyers snap up Jeep branded merchandise wherever they can find it, but the actual Jeep dealer network in China is only 120 strong. Still, sales were up 63 percent last year, and Jeep CEO Mike Manley is sure that could rise even further with better availability.

HTC One S could be out in India on June 8

Although it was supposed to be released in India sometime in April, alongside the One X and One V, the HTC One S isn't available there yet (while the other two handsets are). But it looks like the smartphone's Indian debut isn't too far away now. According to The Mobile Store, the One S should be launched on June 8. At the moment, the retailer says the handset will cost 33,000 INR (about $593).

The One S is HTC's thinnest smartphone ever (only 7.8 mm). Like the One X and One V, it runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with Sense 4 UI.

If that's what we're looking at through photos supplied by a historically reliable uBreakiFix, talk of bigger iPhone screens might just pan out, as it looks decidedly taller than the iPhone 4S we use today. Apple may likewise be going all old-school iPhone on us, with a modern twist: we could be reverting to an aluminum back with more receptive materials (likely glass) at the ends, just in a much thinner form that keeps the steel antenna band.
