Boston Dynamics' PETMAN is a BigDog on two legs

Remember the BigDog robot from Boston Dynamics that is still something to look at even today. Well, it seems that the company have managed to cobble together a two legged version of the BigDog, calling it PETMAN – short for Protection Ensemble Test Mannequin. Taking a good 13 months to design it as well as 17 months to build, this man-sized robot is capable of moving around just like a human being in a creepy manner, retaining its balance even when pushed. What is the purpose of the PETMAN. Well, it is meant to test clothing which will in turn be used by our men on the battlefield.

Jolicloud heads to the actual cloud, Joli OS gets open-sourced

Mum's been the word from the Jolicloud camp over the past few months - summer vacation, we get it - but the company has apparently been working quite diligently on what's next: the "new Jolicloud platform." According to a mildly vague blog post from the outfit, the next edition of the OS will introduce "the personal cloud," enabling users to access the information stored there from "your iPhone, your Android phone, your tablet, your computer and pretty much any connected device with its API." In related news, Joli OS has been open sourced and is now available to the community, and if you're interested in finding out more about the whole o

Barnes & Noble's new NookColor to be unveiled 7th November?

With Amazon's new Kindle Fire tablet gaining a lot of attention, not just as the company's first Android tablet, but as a possible e-reader as well, Barnes & Noble's new NookColor seems to have taken a backseat. There has been rumors that suggested B&N has plans to launch a new NookColor, but now it seems that thanks to The Digital Reader, that release could come as early as the 7th of November. In a way this makes sense, especially since the last Nook was almost a year ago, so keeping to a yearly refresh of the hardware makes sense for B&N.

Microsoft cracks open a window to the future, anticipates our laziness (video)

In the future, we'll all be slaves to rectangles. No, really. Well, at least that's the prognosis, albeit sanitized, Microsoft has slickly pieced together in its Productivity Future Vision concept video. It's a mostly seamless world where all of our interactions are made to be mobile, virtual, efficient and white-washed, but it actually just reads as too darn fussy and overcomplicated. Sure, we could get behind contactless payment, tablets with holographic displays and eyeglasses that translate conversations when you've just stepped off a red eye into some foreign destination - that's all incredibly useful.

Of course, the table has less annoying uses. You could make a stop-motion time-lapse of something you make, for example.
