Sprint Galaxy Tab to receive Android 2.3 Gingerbread update

Sprint Galaxy Tab to receive Android 2.3 Gingerbread update

The original Samsung Galaxy Tab was meant to be an iPad killer, but unfortunately, it must have gotten its identity and purpose mixed up along the way because it was nowhere near such status after arriving on the market. Well, considering the larger Galaxy Tab 10.1 has already been released, surely there is quite a number of original Galaxy Tab owners who have made the upgrade switch. For those who have remained blindly loyal, here's some good news – your Sprint Galaxy Tab will be receiving the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update very soon, where it will be known as build number EF17, sporting HD Bluetooth support as well.

A Third, Possibly 7-Inch, Sharp Galapagos Tablet Slinks through the FCC

It has been a while since we have seen or heard of the Galapagos line of tablets from Sharp. The devices were last seen earlier this year when a 5.5-inch and 10.8-inch model were revealed in an FCC filing. We caught a glimpse of what to expect a few days later at CES, but it looks like yet another Galapagos tablet could be on the way. Yes, the first two still haven't arrived, but a new FCC filing suggests a 7-inch model is on the way to fill the gap left between the two models we already know of. Other than confirmation of 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, nothing else can be said about the EB-W71LJ-H on account of a confidentiality request.

RIM may scraps 10-inch PlayBook to focus on QNX-powered superphone

BlackBerry PlayBook enthusiasts will want to cuddle up with their favorite blanket and a carton of ice cream, as the 10-inch version of RIM's tablet may have been given the axe. N4BB reports that its development was recently cancelled to focus on an upcoming QNX-based “superphone,” said to feature a 1.2GHz single-core processor (same as on the Bold Touch 9900) and a 4.3-inch HD-quality display. It's no secret that phones powered by this platform are on the roadmap, but scrapping a PlayBook project in its behalf could indicate the company's elevated desire to get it to market even sooner than originally planned.

Hybrid air car is eco-friendly

What's better than a flying car. A flying car that's great for the environment of course. It has been reported that aircraft designer Michael Moshier and test-pilot Robert Bulaga have begun development on the world's first fuel-electric hybrid air car. Drawing inspiration from Trek Aerospace's shrouded propeller (“ducted fan”) technology used in the SoloTrek XFV, a single person VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, they came up with the idea of a hybrid air car that can carry more than one passenger.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D won't erase saved data

Have you ever had that dreaded feeling when you deleted your save game data by accident, or overwritten it. Well, Capcom intends to introduce a built-in safety feature to prevent that from happening – you can no longer erase or reset saved data in their upcoming Nintendo 3DS title, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. Yup, this means all skill points and mission scores which you picked up along the way will remain on the cartridge – at least until the flash memory in there fails to work. Some of you might applaud this move, but as there are always two sides to a coin, so does this particular gambit by Capcom.

New Android-powered Motorola portrait QWERTY on the way to Sprint

New Android-powered Motorola portrait QWERTY on the way to Sprint

Sprint and Motorola may have decided that the XPRT, basically a rebranded Droid Pro, just wasn't enough to satisfy the Now Network's portrait QWERTY-craving customers, so the two companies are working on yet another device to sport Google's mobile operating system in this interesting form factor. The new phone, unlike the XPRT, will have a more curvy design, with its keyboard having a ‘smile pattern' as opposed to the XPRT's ‘ruler pattern' apparently. This new phone will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box. It may also include 4G WiMax connectivity capabilities.

Acer launches 16 GB Iconia Tab A500 in the UK for £349.99

Acer has decided to launch a new version of its Iconia Tab A500 Android Honeycomb tablet in the UK. The only difference between the new model and the ‘old' one is the integrated internal storage space. The new tablet has 16 GB, whereas the one already on the market has double that – 32 GB. That obviously means that Acer is able to sell the 16 GB version for less, £100 less in fact. The recommended retail price for the 16 GB Iconia Tab A500 is just £349.99, making it £50 cheaper than the equivalent, 16 GB iPad 2 from Apple.

How Fring is Schooling Skype on Every Single Front

The other day we got an overview of the VoIP app landscape. There are many solutions across various platforms that allow users to call for free from their mobile device. In terms of user-base, there is no denying that the king of this space is Skype with over 600 million users and an approved $8 billion acquisition from Microsoft. However, when it comes to innovation, the picture is completely different.

Robots are slowly but surely creeping into various aspects of our everyday life, including the workspace. Well, it seems that soon the job of deboning raw meat in freezing temperatures might be handed over to robots – after all, the HAMDAS-R has been rather successful in trials, capable of deboning up to 500 pork ham thighs each hour using the help of X-rays. Is the Followup to the Motorola XPRT already in Development for Sprint?

The Motorola XPRT has only aged a couple of months since its launch on Sprint, but it looks like its followup may already be under development. A new Motorola handset in the same QWERTY candybar style as the XPRT has been spied, looking more BlackBerry-esque than ever with a curvier design. Little else is known about the handset, which is said to run Android 2.3 and potentially sport a WiMAX radio.

Raytrix Offers World's First Plenoptic Camera Series

Germany-based Raytrix introduces what they claim is the first plenoptic camera series in the market, stealing the thunder from other companies interested in developing their own, including Adobe and even Lytro. A plenoptic camera, also known as light-field camera, uses a microlens array to capture 4D light field information about the photograph's subject. This data can be used to improve the solution of computer graphics-related problems.
The cameras range from the entry-level Raytrix R5 that shoots photos at one megapixel, to the high-end R11 (pictured) that captures images at three megapixels.

The sextet of hackers known as “Lulz Security” may be done with their 50-day reign of semi-terror, but that doesn't mean the ramifications of their actions are over. In a final file released, the group released info from approximately 550,000 Battlefield Heroes beta user accounts (according to Rock, Paper, Shotgun) as well as the info from roughly 50,000 “random gaming forum” users. EA tells Eurogamer that the info was from “an early beta version” of the game, and “no emails, account history, credit card numbers or payment methods” were obtained.

The Atrix 4G is today an eminently more intriguing smartphone than it was yesterday. Leaked code from Motorola's upcoming Gingerbread update for the handset has made its way into the hands of the always-eager coders at xda-developers, which has resulted in two things: one, the discovery that Motorola intends to unlock the Atrix's bootloader when it upgrades it to Android 2.3, and two, downloadable files to let you do exactly that today, even if you're still stuck on Froyo.

Root-Free Gingerbread RUU Leaks for the Droid Incredible 2

A leaked build of Gingerbread for the HTC Droid Incredible 2 has reached the developer underground and is ready for installation on non-rooted devices. That is correct, sir. This leaked RUU file presents one of the rare instances where pre-release software is better suited for installation on root-free Android handsets than on devices modified from their stock software. The flashable update isn’t compatible with currently rooted Droid Incredible 2 handsets. A pre-rooted version of the software exists but is of little value to Incredible 2 users until the AlphaRevX team goes public with their root method.

MagicPrefs Brings About More Options Over Your Multitouch Trackpad

The nice thing about MacBooks would be the multitouch trackpad, which pretty much functions like how the touch screen on the iPhone/iPod toch/iPad does. It incorporates various multitouch gestures, such as swiping and pinching. As cool as the concept is, one bad thing about it is that it's limited to what Apple allows you do to do, which is where MagicPrefs comes in. MagicPrefs is actually a software that allows the user to assign different actions to the multitouch gestures, something which could not be done before.

ChillBed Laptop Cooling Stand Review

ChillBed Laptop Cooling Stand Review

One of the problems with laptops is their tendency to overheat, which can damage internal components.  Their small size doesn't allow a lot of venting nor big cooling fans to keep down heat.  And their portability often means that people are using them places that can block the cooling vents - like on laps or teenagers who use them while lying on the bed.  There are a lot of products that try to address the cooling problems inherent with laptops.  Some products are as simple as little plastic feet to elevate the back of the laptop and allow airflow on all sides.  Some are more elaborate lapdesks or stands with fans to blow air across the

Sprint Q3 roadmap leaked: Samsung Epic 2, BlackBerry Bold Touch, ‘full touch' 4G Samsung on the way

From time to time, we find out about carriers' plans for the future (plans regarding new device launches) via leaks of their roadmaps. Today is the day when yet another roadmap has leaked, this time from Sprint. This is my next heard about Sprint's plans for the third quarter of this year (that's July to September), and the carrier certainly has some interesting handsets up its sleeves. Let's dive right in. First of all, a successor to the Samsung Epic 4G (Sprint's version of the Galaxy S) will be released, and it will be called (not surprisingly at all) Epic 2. And while this will be succeeding the Epic 4G, it won't be entirely different.

If nothing else, the 2012 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder wins the contest for the Porsche with the longest and perhaps clumsiest name ever. But after a day of driving it on good roads all around Stuttgart's farm country and blasting along the no-limit Autobahn, however, we break down like always and decide it's pretty damned cool to possess any 911 Turbo S whatsoever. What's ultimately best about this admittedly opportunistic offering from Porsche's marketing department is that it doesn't cost one red cent more than the standard 530-horsepower 911 Turbo S – $160,700 for the coupe or $172,100 for the convertible.

ExEn ports XNA games over to iOS

ExEn ports XNA games over to iOS

Ever wished you could play your favorite Xbox 360, Windows or Windows 7 games on your iOS device. Well that may all become a reality thanks to a programmer named Andrew Russell. He is developing ExEn, an open source software that allows developers to port games created with XNA to platforms such as iOS and Silverlight. As if the iOS platform didn't have enough games already, with ExEn it's going to have access to even more.
While the program is far from complete, the developer has recently released the first public preview of ExEn to show off his progress.

If you happen to own an Android device that has a front-facing camera, you'll be interested in the latest security app to be added to the Android Market, Visidon Applock. Unfortunately, the app will not work on your main lockscreen, but will instead protect any app you wish by scanning using facial recognition. This is a great app for any parent that has small children who love to play games on your smartphone, but you don't want them sending an email or text message by accident. If the light is to dim in your current environment, there is a passcode bypass option.

The best feature of this app is that it is free.
