Auto manufacturers sought for new advanced metal that's 100x lighter than Styrofoam

Automakers are being pinched to increase safety and improve fuel efficiency, but those two goals often work against each other. That could change thanks to a material that is 99.99-percent air. Ward's Automotive reports that the California Institute of Technology, HRL Laboratories and the University of California-Irvine have combined to develop a micro-lattice material that is said to be 100 times lighter than Styrofoam and strong like steel. We'd call this material paper-thin, but the truth is even more impressive: the material is comprised of tiny woven tubes that are 1,000 times thinner than a human hair.

Zalman's newest line of solid state drives, the F1-series, is slated for launch tomorrow in Japan. The F1 Series SSDs utilize a 2.5-inch form-factor SATA 6 Gb/s interface. The drive is based on the SandForce SF-2281 controller with multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memory. Its available in capacities of 60 GB, 120 GB and 240 GB. Nokia Ace LTE arriving on AT&T next March?

Earlier today we wrote about the HTC Radiant and Samsung Mandel, and now it looks like we've got more information about the devices. Paul Thurrott from Winsupersite posted some additional details about the upcoming LTE phones. According to his sources, the phones will be arriving on AT&T before the middle of 2012 and will be revealed at CES 2012. And to add one more device to the mix, he claims that the Nokia Ace LTE phone is also arriving on AT&T on March 18th. That's the first time we've had a specific release date for the phone. The Nokia Lumia 710 is also said to be arriving on Verizon in April, but not as a 4G LTE device.

Verizon to start charging “convenience fees”

After the nationwide outage yesterday, it looks like Verizon is going to give its customers another reason to be mad at it: the folks over at Droid-Life have gotten their hands on snapshots showing off certain internal Verizon documents stating that it will be implementing a new “convenience fee” in the near future. According to the documents, Verizon would be charging customers and additional $2 if they pay their bills over the phone or online. If true, this would enter in effect on January 15 2012.

Samsung already sold 1 million Galaxy Note units, may bring the device to AT&T in 2012

After having been sold in more than 1 million units already, the Samsung Galaxy Note phone/tablet hybrid is on its way to the USA. So far, the Note hasn't been officially sold Stateside. If you reside there and want one, you have to resort to imported units. But that may soon change – especially if your carrier of choice is AT&T.

Samsung today took to Flickr to publicize the 1 million sales milestone. In the brief announcement, the company also mentions that it expects Galaxy Note sales to grow even more when it arrives in the US next year.

The Samsung Galaxy Note may end up being sold by AT&T, and sooner than we may think.

LG unveils 84-inch 'ultra definition' 4K TV it's bringing to CES 2012

LG let us know at CES 2011 that it had 4K LCD televisions in the pipeline, but unfortunately they didn't make it out this year. Expect for that to change in 2012, as the company just announced it's bringing an 84-inch "ultra definition" (3840x2160) TV to Las Vegas to go along with its 55-inch OLED. It has all of LG's Cinema 3D and Smart TV features built-in, including support for that upgraded Magic Motion remote and voice control. There's no official word yet on when we'll see these on shelves or at what price, but it certainly looks production ready compared to other prototypes that have been displayed over the years.

Microsoft testing fix for Windows Phone SMS security hole

. Microsoft is reportedly testing a fix to a Windows Phone SMS security hole that was first discovered by Khaled Salameh earlier this month. “ Security Team contacted me today, they've confirmed the WP7 SMS Bug and found the root cause, a fix is currently under testing,” Salameh tweeted on Wednesday. Here's how the bug worked: one user could send a text message with a specific string of characters to a Windows Phone device that would automatically reboot the phone and then lock the Windows Phone user out of the Messaging Hub.

China tests train that hit 500km/h

Imagine getting across the country on a train that is capable of hitting speeds of up to 500km/h – don't you think that this is going to be a treat. It would eliminate the hassle of checking in an hour earlier for domestic flights, as well as doing away with those pesky security checkpoints at airports. China is at the forefront here, where their test train managed to achieve a speed of 500km/h on a railway line in Qingdao, Shandong province.

Vending machines typically dispense foodstuff, such as drinks and snacks, but what about one that dispenses WiFi. Well, technically it does not actually dispense WiFi, but Tokyo-based Asahi Soft Drinks recently took the wraps off a new vending machine that not only dispenses the company's products, but also emits a WiFi signal within a 50m radius. There is no catch here and users will not have to purchase a drink in order to use the WiFi, although there is a 30 minute limit before the user is cut off although it appears that reconnecting is possible.

Kindle accessory maker sues Amazon for extortion

. M-Edge Accessories has filed a lawsuit against Amazon with a federal court in Maryland that accuses the online retailer of bullying it into coughing up higher commissions in exchange for better placement on Amazon's website. M-Edge Accessories isn't just filing a suit for extortion according to The Wall Street Journal, however - the accessory maker is also accusing Amazon of patent infringement, false advertising, creating unfair competition and hampering M-Edge's customer relations. Amazon reportedly played some pretty dirty games with M-Edge in order to secure a larger percentage of commissions.

LG Prada 3.0 is now available in Korea, will hit Europe in January

LG is surely not wasting time in bringing its latest Prada 3.0 Android smartphone to the market. The device is already available for purchase in Korea - only two weeks after its official announcement. The smartphone will become available in Europe and more Asian markets in January. No info on other countries has been given at the moment.

The LG Prada 3.0 contract price in Korea varies, depending on the wireless plan of your choice. In case you want the device sans any commitment, prepare to shell out 899,800 won (approximately $780).

Ewen the Cheerlight robot reacts to tweets about colors

A robot creator has managed to create a special robot named Ewen, that reacts to tweets about colors. Whenever a tweet is sent to the @cheerlights account, the robot reads it, and depending on the color on the tweet - it gives a different facial expression. The robot is designed to look like a Jawa from Star Wars (though its creator calls Ewen an Ewok), but it functions as intended. Red makes him angry, yellow happy, blue sad, and purple confused. He doesn't react to other colors at the moment, but we're pretty sure it can be upgraded in the future.

Samsung to push Bada 2.0 updates to its Wave range in Q1 2012

Back in September, Samsung announced that all of its older Wave smartphones would be updated to Bada 2.0 starting Q4 2011. Not long after that, the company has excluded the Wave 525 and Wave 533 models, citing hardware limitations. And now it looks like the Bada 2.0 update for the remaining handsets is delayed.
According to Samsung Spain, older Wave phones will only get to taste the new version of the OS starting the first quarter of 2012.

It looks like Nokia now has its own category of apps and games in Windows Phone Marketplace - at least that's what a Lumia 800 spotted somewhere in France is suggesting (see the photo below). For most of us, holiday travel is little more than a slight inconvenience, but an Amarillo, Texas family has found out just how treacherous taking to the road in winter can be. David Higgins, his wife and his five-year-old daughter packed into the family's GMC Yukon for a ski trip in New Mexico. Shortly after the trio crossed the state line, a severe snow storm descended, forcing Higgins off the road. The SUV quickly became mired in the white stuff, and it wasn't long before the entire vehicle was encased in a massive snow drift.

Boxee 1.5 update on the way

Boxee announced on its blog today that it will be releasing version 1.5 of its Boxee software very soon. The update will improve the home screen with additional links; give the featured section a face lift, optimized search, made the Menu more accessible, updated the Movies and TV Shows layout, expanded the thumbnails in Watch Later & Friends sections and added filters. The version 1.5 update is now available as a beta for Mac, Windows and Linux users. Boxee version 1.5 will be available for Boxee.tv at the end of January next year.

Looks like LogMeIn Inc. has suddenly cottoned on to the freemium business model, deciding to offer its basic remote desktop app for iPhone and iPad entirely gratis. Previously, you had to hand over $29.99 for the simple pleasure of accessing your PC and Mac desktops via LogMeIn Ignition, but the new free version (simply ‘LogMeIn') amply provides for that barebones service, while bells and whistles are reserved for those who buy an in-app subscription to LogMeIn Pro at $40 per year — including things like HD video and sound streaming, file transferring and integration with cloud storage services .

T-Platforms to construct 10-petaflop supercomputer for Moscow State University

The Moscow State University in Russia recently T-Platforms, a high-performance computing company, assigning them with a task that will see T-Platforms develop and construct a ten petaflop cluster which should enter operational status by the time 2013 rolls around. At 10 petaflops, this particular machine ought to place it just shy of the current fastest supercomputer on earth, where credit goes to the Japanese K Computer that has been rated at 10.51 petaflops. In order to achieve this, it will incorporate a range of different node types.

Some of you may have noticed, when perusing the interwebs on your Kindle Fire, that a certain Google-branded Market refused to load in the slate's Silk browser. In fact, it automatically redirected you to the Amazon App store in an unsettling bit of URL hijacking. Well, with the latest update to the tablet, that slightly befuddling restriction has been lifted and the questionable behavior rectified. Presumably this was originally intended to save customers confusion and support staff headaches when trying to install an app from the Android Market failed.

Electronic Tattoo Concept Monitors Blood Disorders

A recent Greener Gadgets Design Competition yields a concept that blurs the line between science fiction and reality. Engineer Jim Mielke demonstrated a “Digital Tattoo Interface” technology, which inserts a touch-based display underneath the skin. A tightly-rolled unit made of thin, flexible silicone is inserted into the skin where it unfurls into a full display. It is powered by blood flow as it is attached to an artery and vein using a blood fuel cell that turns glucose and oxygen into electricity. Once connected, a “tattoo” that looks like a cell phone display appears on the skin.

Kia Ray EV announced

Kia Motors, one of Korea's popular car manufacturers, has announced the launch of Korea's first Electric Vehicle (EV) - the Kia Ray EV. If the first thing that popped into your mind was the sleek curves of a manta ray's body when you heard the name “Ray” you're not alone - that was my first though. However it looks like Kia has decided to go with a not-so-sleek boxy shape for the Ray EV. It shares the same dimensions as the Ray CUV (crossover utility vehicle) that was launched last month, but instead of the 1.0 liter gasoline engine, it makes use of a 50KW electric motor and a 16.4 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack to run.
