Robots Could Be Tickled In The Future

Robots Could Be Tickled In The Future

Do you think that we take the small things in life for granted. Take for instance, you holding on to an egg without breaking it, or how about closing your eyes and feel the breeze caress your face. Of course, we might think nothing much of those, but pause for a moment and reflect on how robots are. I suppose if they were capable of emotions, then they would certainly want to "kill" (hopefully not literally) to be able to have the sense of touch built-in.

Mazda books first yearly profit in half-decade, NA still a drag

Automotive News reports Mazda has posted its first annual profit in five years. The company made $364.3 million in the last fiscal year, following a $1.14 billion loss the year prior. Operating profit also jumped up by $91.3 million to $572.8 million, thanks in part to a revenue increase of 8 percent to $23.42 billion. But the news isn't all rays of sunshine. North America continues to be a problem for Mazda where the automaker posted yet another loss. The manufacturer lost $519.1 million last year, up from $427.8 million the year prior.

Nokia Reportedly Interested In Lytro-type Camera For Future Smartphones

For those who have not heard about the Lytro camera, it's basically a camera that allows users to shoot their photos first, and choose which points to focus later on. It is pretty handy as it allows photographers to capture the moment without having to worry about having the correct focus. Interestingly a report on Bloomberg has suggested that Nokia could be interested in a similar technology and could be looking to invest in a Californian startup company which creates Lytro-style camera technology which could be slim enough to fit into mobile phones.

Rumor: Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to be 6 inches, house 3GB of RAM

If today's rumors are to be believed it looks like Samsung is about to be the first to take the next big step in mobile computing. The company is apparently gearing up to launch the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with a whopping 3GB of RAM. That sounds tiny in relation to computers, but in mobile technology — including most ARM-based tablets — 3GB of RAM is quite amazing. Beyond that little nugget, we're told to expect the phone to have a 5.99-inch display (which we'll just round up to 6 inches for the sake of not indulging in Samsung's .99 tactic that has become so widespread in retail pricing).

San Francisco Cops Go Undercover To Prevent iPhone Thefts

Statistics show that the percentage of iPhone ownership in San Francisco is very, very close to the ratio of 1:2, which clearly places it at the highest rate of any major city in the US. This does not come across as a surprise considering how the city's population has a soft spot towards Apple, and not only that, it would naturally mean that the percentage of iPhone theft in this city would be the highest among all major cities, too.

Chrysler investing $20M in Toledo plant to support 9-speed auto production

In 2011, Chrysler announced a $72-million investment in its Toledo Machining Plant to modernize production of the eight- and nine-speed torque-converters for automatic transmissions made there. That upgrade work won't be finished until Q3 of this year, but Chrysler has already announced a further $19.6-million investment to increase production capacity for the nine-speeders. The extra units will be necessary because the nine-speed transmission they'll be mated to is going into three popular models: it will debut on the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, then go into the Chrysler 200 and Dodge Dart.

7-year-old boy steals dad's car to avoid church

Police in Utah were in for a shock when they spotted an erratic driver recently. After following the white Dodge Intrepid for a spell, the pursuing officers watched as the driver parked the car, jumped from behind the wheel and ran into his father's house. Standard fare, you say. Not quite.
The driver was actually a seven-year-old boy who had pilfered his dad's keys to skip out on going to church.

There's plenty to love about the madness that goes on at Hennessey Performance, but for us, it's the fact that the company has no loyalty to any brand or nameplate. If it's quick, it flies at Hennessey. The team recently turned their attention toward squeezing a bit more thrust from the latest-generation Ford Taurus SHO, and the result is the MaxBoost 445. Thanks to a cold-air induction system, new hard piping for the turbo, engine management calibration and a Corsa stainless steel cat-back exhaust, the car dumps 445 horsepower to all four wheels – a bunch more ponies than the standard car's already plentiful 365 hp.

Motor Trend does the Cuban classic car thing

As car enthusiasts, we all know the little gem about classic American cars driving around the streets of Cuba, but few of us will ever be able to see these sites first hand. Fortunately, Motor Trend recently spent some time in the land of cigars, mojitos and Yank Tanks to create this incredible mini-documentary about the cars and the country for the latest video in its Epic Drives series. While the cars look like they came straight out of the 1950s, most of them are powered by modern-ish engines for the sake of fuel economy and ease of repair.

A couple of weeks back we reported that The Pirate Bay had been kicked out of Greenland after merely two days. Tele-Post, a telecom company which monitors .GK registrations in Greenland, said that it blocked two Pirate Bay domain names because it fears they will be put to illegal use. The world's number 1 file sharing website has now found a new home in Iceland, and has switched to the .IS domain. The Icelandic registry, ISNIC, has said that they are not responsible for a registrant's use of their domains and that they will not take any action against the .IS domain names of The Pirate Bay, unless a court order compels them.

Just a few months ago, fan safety at racetracks was a hot topic following the last-lap NASCAR Nationwide Series crash at Daytona that sent large pieces of racecars into the grandstands injuring 33 fans. Now, a freak incident at a National Hot Rod Association event resulted in a drag racer's bodywork flying into the crowd at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Charlotte over the weekend. The carbon-fiber body of Robert Hight's Ford Mustang funny car blew off toward the end of a run when his engine exploded, but fortunately, the two fans evaluated after the incident were later released without serious injury.

We were already pretty impressed with the original Zenbook UX31, so we certainly have been looking forward to checking out the same ultrabook design with some seriously improved internals. The UX31A is extremely light at 3.08lbs, has a 50Whr battery, and it also happens to have an Intel Core i7 processor inside of it.

Voice-to-text Just As Dangerous As Texting While Driving, According To Study

Texting while driving is as big of a no-no as talking on the phone while driving, especially since both activities are distracting and could cause accidents. With the introduction of voice assistants, such as Siri and S Voice and etc. and their ability to convert voice to text, and text to voice and so on, logically it would seem like we might have found a safer alternative to reply and read text messages while driving, right. However a survey conducted by the Texas Transportation Institute thinks otherwise and believes that voice-to-text activities can dull reactions the same way texting while driving might.

Here at Phandroid, though, we're especially concerned with proper disposal of cellular phones. The real truth is that we hate selling or getting rid of phones, but sometimes it has to be done. Instead of throwing them into the trash, it's best to sell them, donate them, or trade them in.

The rather awesome ItalDesign Giugiaro Parcour concept first seen at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show hasn't been affixed to some museum plinth just yet. The high-riding assemblage of curves, wedges and prisms laid over the carcass of a Lamborghini Gallardo – in both coupe and convertible forms – was sent out to play for the cameras, solely for our benefit. We're not sure what we'd do with a 550-horsepower off-road coupe with a 13-inch maximum ride height and a track mode that can get to 60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds and goes 200 mph. Google+ Comments Can Now Be Added To Blogger Based Websites

It looks like Google is wandering in to Facebook territory, the latter has a comments system that websites owners can add, now the internet search giant has brought over Google+ comments for Blogger based websites. It seems as if Google is just testing the waters, perhaps in the near future they might allow platforms other than Blogger or WordPress to integrate Google+ comments as well. This new comments feature can be activated from the Blogger Dashboard, its purely opt-in and won't be enforced on all websites based on Blogger.
