Watch a modified Ford GT go 283 mph in a standing mile

The BADD Ford GT built by Performance Power Racing – with the help of its two whirlygigs hanging out back and a fancy new metal called "Pandalloy" – set two records last week at Florida's Kennedy Space Center. From a standstill, the twin-turbo powerhouse got up to 283.232 miles per hour in just 5,280 feet, as measured by Tag Heuer timekeeping. That meant a new record in the standing mile as well as a Guinness World Record for top speed in a street-legal car.

Google Play closing in on Apple's store with 700K apps, says Bloomberg

Amidst all the Nexus excitement from yesterday, Google just hit the 700,000 Android app milestone in its Play Store, according to Bloomberg. That would put it near par with Apple, who announced just last month that its App Store hit that same figure. Like Cupertino's iOS shop, Play (which started off as the Android Market) has been peddling its robot wares since 2008, though the store opened several months after Apple's.

Android 4.2 is teeming with new features and system improvements, but you can bet that Photo Sphere will be the one that's talked about most amongst consumers. While Android phones on the whole have had panoramic modes for years, Apple's iOS 6 update added even more fuel to that fire. Now, Google's taking things to an entirely new level. With Android 4.2, users can snap pictures in every direction, and the system does the stitching.

Chrysler reports that its vehicle sales jumped by 12 percent in the third quarter over the same period in 2011. That step up was enough to bump profits by 80 percent to $381 million on $15.5 billion of net revenue. Moving forward, the automaker expects to see fourth-quarter profit of $210 million, which should help the company realize its forecast of $1.5 billion of net profit for the year. Reuters reports Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne expects the automaker's free cash flow for 2012 to be "well in excess" of $1 billion.

Hints that LG would bring the Optimus LTE II to Verizon have persisted since the spring, which almost led us to wonder if the smartphone was still coming: not to fear, as it's finally here under the Spectrum 2 badge. Other than the expected switch-ups in navigation keys and the mix of both CDMA with global GSM roaming, the design will feel very familiar to anyone who's been on a trip to South Korea lately. The Spectrum 2 preserves the 4.7-inch AH-IPS display, dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4, 8-megapixel camera, 16GB of storage and support for wireless charging for those who buy a charging pad.

Acer to delay Windows RT tablets following Surface announcement

Acer has reportedly postponed the launching of its flagship Windows RT tablets in order to measure the success rate of Microsoft's very own Surface tablet. In an interview with Reuters on Tuesday this week, Acer President Jim Wong allegedly said that the company is now more cautious after Microsoft highlighted its Surface tablet last week. “Originally we had a very aggressive plan to come out very early next year but because of Surface, our R&D development doesn't stop, but we are much more cautious,” said Wong. Apparently the Taiwanese consumer electronics giant initially planned on launching its tablets early next year.

If you're hip to repurposing old tech for new inventions, Invisible is right up your alley. The outfit's effort The New Obsolete was part of the Moogfest happenings this weekend, and our curiosity was immediately piqued.

The Swedish version of Auto Motor und Sport went to the track with one hometown favorite and two over-the-sea gorillas: a Volvo S60 Polestar prototype, BMW M3 and Audi RS4 Avant. The Volvo puts out 508 horsepower from its inline six-cylinder to the ground through a Haldex all-wheel drive system, the BMW M3 grunts out 414 hp to the rear wheels from a 4.4-liter V8 and the RS4 has a 4.2-liter V8 putting down 414 horses via Quattro AWD. The performance numbers to make this even more clear: 0-60 in the RS4 takes 4.7 seconds, in the M3 4.6 seconds, and in the S60 Polestar, just 3.9 seconds.

Button 2.0 Is The First Button Innovation in Centuries

Here's a clever upgrade on the staid, boring button: you put a little hook behind it so it can keep your headphone cords in place. It's pretty simple, but considering how many people walk around with headphones every day, it could make a huge difference. It's a 3-D printed object available for $3.28 from Shapeways. It's an improvement on the button for a specific use that probably never would've been dreamed up had it not been for widely-available 3-D printing.

Well, Samsung and Google has hit back at Apple's bread and butter tablet, their iPad, by introducing the Nexus 10. Running on the latest version of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, the Nexus 10 will clearly go up head to head against the iPad, sporting a whopping resolution count of 2560 x 1600 pixels (300ppi), clearly kicking Apple's vaunted Retina display.

Offense is the best defense, and when it comes to war, making sure that your enemies' communications are knocked out is a pivotal first step towards victory. With so many armies and their weapons relying on sophisticated electronics these days, it makes perfect sense to knock out those circuits to render communications and their weapons as useful as sand in the desert. Boeing has developed a new kind of missile, where they tested it last week successfully, as this missile will actually zap targeted buildings with microwave energy that is so powerful, all the electronics within will cease functioning immediately.

USPTO has 'tentatively' invalidated Apple's key rubber-banding patent

The US Patent and Trademark Office may have just thrown a wrench into Apple's recent courtroom triumph over Samsung by invalidating one of the patents at the heart of the victory: rubber-banding. We noted at the time that Apple hit a "home run" with that particular IP, as jurors declared that all 21 disputed Samsung devices infringed it, no doubt resulting in a large part of the $1 billion (and counting) owed by the Korean maker. "Claim 19" of patent 7469381, which covers that feature, was invalidated by the USPTO on two counts, both of which were cases of prior art that allegedly existed before Cupertino claimed them.

Microsoft has released a version of Skype that is optimized for Windows 8, which looks similar to other Skype versions except for several stuff that can only be done with Win 8. For instance, apart from pinching your Live Tiles to zoom out, you can utilize semantic zoom to navigate through a long list of contacts. And since Skype can run in the background, you can set up your Start Screen in such as way the Skype Live Tile would show notifications such as missed calls.

We don't think so, and while we're woefully short on details – powertrain, price, performance – we can at least bask in the glow of a nicely filmed teaser video. The first of many, we imagine. Let's take a minute to dissect what's going on here. We see artists scraping away at a clay model, followed by a few detail shots of a heavily camouflaged prototype, test drivers strapping into five-point seatbelts and some high-speed racetrack footage.
