Hand gesture controls coming to a car near you?

It looks as if the gesture-sensitive interface for the Cadillac Cue infotainment system is just the beginning of gesture integration in our vehicles. Wired reports that Microsoft is already investigating ways to incorporate technology lifted from its Xbox Kinect. Likewise, Harman has unveiled a new system that recognizes both hand and facial cues to control various cabin features. Drivers can reportedly use eye blinks to turn the stereo on, tilt their heads to turn up the volume and even tap the steering wheel to skip songs.

Strategy Analytics: iPad keeps riding high in Q2 tablet market share, Android doesn't budge

The Apple iPad may as well be called the Teflon Tablet for now, since challengers can't quite stick. Thanks to those 17 million iPads shipped in the second quarter, Strategy Analytics estimates that Apple held on to the 68 percent of tablet market share that IDC credited to the company in the previous season. That may not sound like a change in the status quo, but it's a significant jump from the 62 percent Apple had a year ago — and not very good news for anyone else. Android is still holding on at 29.3 percent, although that's slightly underwhelming given the surge of extra devices in that time frame.

HTC One X+ with 1.7GHz Tegra 3 might be headed to T-Mobile USA

HTC One X+ with 1.7GHz Tegra 3 might be headed to T-Mobile USA

So far, AT&T has been enjoying exclusivity of the HTC One X in the US (theirs is a renamed Krait-powered One XL), but now a rumor based on a leaked shot of T-Mobile's inventory shows that the carrier will be getting the "HTC One X+". So, what's the difference between One X and One X+. Apparently, the plus version will use a Tegra 3+ chipset. The updated version of the Nvidia SoC will have its quad-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz (instead of 1.5GHz like in the international One X) and a GPU that's 25% faster.

According to the leaked shot, the HTC One X+ for T-Mobile USA will arrive in late September.

OLPC XO Touch 1.75 to use Neonode tech, take multi-touch on world tour

OLPC XO Touch 1.75 to use Neonode tech, take multi-touch on world tour

The One Laptop Per Child's project just got one step closer to updating its venerable XO portable through a newly-struck licensing deal with Neonode. The XO Touch 1.75, a slight rebranding of the as yet unreleased XO 1.75 we saw last year, will use Neonode's MultiSensing to give the laptop a multi-touch screen that's both very responsive and eco-friendly in the same breath. Even as it samples finger input at up to 1GHz, the new OLPC system's 300 DPI display will still use under 2W of power and remain viewable in bright sunlight - students can even wake up the new model with a gesture instead of using anything so crude as a power button.

LG manages $138 million profit in Q2 despite stalled smartphone efforts

. LG Electronics (066570) on Wednesday reported its financial results for the second quarter of 2012. As the company continues to push forward and pin hopes on the booming smartphone market, it still hasn't found a way to profit from its efforts with Google's (GOOG) Android platform. LG saw a healthy 46% increase in net profit, which rose to $138 million, but smartphone sales were down more than 28% year-over-year to KRW 2.29 billion. LG saw solid sequential growth in its home entertainment, home appliance and energy solutions divisions, though only the home appliance division managed revenue growth over the second quarter of 2011.

Arabic in Windows Phone 8 spotted

Arabic in Windows Phone 8 spotted

I am rather surprised to hear that Windows Phone 8 is certainly taking its own sweet time to make headway in new markets, with one of the main stumbling blocks being Windows Phone 8′s relatively poor language support. What you see on the right would be Arabic in Windows Phone 8, where there is the presence of the app list which comes from the left instead of the right. It might seem rather disorienting to some of us at first glance, but when you consider the nature of the Arabic language, it makes perfect sense. After all, Arabic reads from right to left, and hence the same format applies to options and icon indicators amongst others.
